As Spring heralds the joys of Summer, Appledore calls forth all good friends, present, past, and future to join us for Midsummer in the Hollow. This event will be the venue for the Appledore Championship, Scholars of St. Thomas Aquinas, and the annual Feast of Fellowship.
Appledore's Championship ...
seeks a well rounded Champion. Candidates will be challenged to accumulate points by competing in all or some of a variety of contests. This year's theme is; The Siege!
Points will be awarded for each category; First place in any category will receive 6 points, Second place 5 points, and so on. The minimum a candidate can receive is 1 point in any category (for armoured or rapier if candidates are not carded they can receive a point simply by armouring up).
For AS 43, the Appledore Championship categories are determined to be:
Bardic
-
a song or poem to lift spirits during the Siege, or perhaps to taunt the barbarians at the gate? Extra points will be given for a period piece or one created or performed in a period style. |
Science

-
can you prepare a dish for your Lord from the mean pickings of the almost bare larder? Each candidate with be provided with identical ingredients on the day of this challenge and those ingredients will represent what might be left over in the larder of a castle under siege. Candidates can bring their own spices to add to their dishes. Extra points will be given for period style dishes and cooking over coals instead of a modern stove. |

is your dish a feast for the eyes as well as the palate? Again, candidates can use their own spices to garnish and can ‘harvest’ garnishes from the local EDIBLE flora. Extra points will be given for a period garnish or presentation. |
Archery
-
can you pick off the enemies half hidden in the wood? This will be a timed round of 2 minutes with one candidate shooting at a time at partially hidden silhouettes. Candidates are encouraged to share their arrows so they do not run out of ammunition. |
Armoured
-
how long can you defend the parapet against the barbarians scaling the wall? Candidates will defend a wall walk against enemies scaling the wall. The wall will be the pas d’arms barrier inside the list field. Candidates can choose a main weapon and shield. Attackers will use single sword only, because they would have needed their off hand to climb the ladders. Attackers have unlimited lives at a resurrection point. Points will be awarded to the candidates according to how long they defend the wall and survive. |
Rapier
-
how long can you hold the postern passage to keep invaders from the gate house? Similar to the Armoured challenge, candidates in the rapier scenario will be defending a passageway represented by two tables placed in the list field wide enough for two people to stand shoulder to shoulder. Candidates can choose a rapier and an off hand parrying device or dagger. Attackers will have a single sword only. Attackers have unlimited lives at a resurrection point. Points will be awarded to the candidates according to how long they defend the passageway and survive. |

The Site
Skunk Hollow has a feast hall and kitchen, plenty of grassy areas for camping, outhouses, a fire pit, and potable running water.
Site address: 34231 91A St., Oliver, BC.
Directions: Make your way to Oliver on Highway 97. From the south, turn right at the first traffic light (south end of the mall, 346th St.) Stay on 346th through the big S curve as it goes past the RCMP station and new fire hall, then around the end of the airport. At the second right, turn right. Go straight along one side of the airport and through a 90 degree turn to the left. Just past the turn, slow down. You'll see a street sign and some SCA directional signs right in front of you. You MUST TRUST that there is a real road here, because there is. You just can't see it until you're already committed to it. Doing this will put you onto a very short but steep road. It's about a ten percent grade, but it's paved. Immediately at the bottom of the hill, turn right into the driveway. This is the site. Proceed between the two houses to the troll gate.
